Summer Reading at SMS

 SUMMER READING AT SMS

We have some unique opportunities for students who would like to keep up with their reading over the summer! We have a great library, and it would be a shame for those books to sit on the shelves over the summer when you have so much time to relax and read. Because I usually spend a day in the library every other week, I wanted to have a way to notify students that they could stop in and check out library materials.

In 2000 I started a Summer Reading listserv. What's a listserv? It's another word for an e-mail discussion group. It's a way for those of us who like to spend some leisure time with our favorite books and then share our opinions with us. Those student who are able to join can check out library books on the last day of school. You can use the listserv to share your thoughts us, ask for reading suggestions, create polls that we can all vote in, upload pictures of you on vacation, suggest great websites and see my list of favorite websites, too. Once you are a member, you simply send a message to summerreading@yahoogroups.com, and all of us will receive it. We usually have 125+ members each summer.

How do you subscribe? There are two ways. The easiest way is to send me an e-mail at dgarbin@stsd.org, and I will automatically add you to the group. You could also send an e-mail to summerreading-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. You will then need to follow the directions when you receive the next e-mail. Either way, you will receive a welcoming message with instructions for posting messages, changing your profile, or unsubscribing.  It’s that simple!!

We don't charge any fines, and the books are due back during the first week of school. Make sure you keep a list of all of the books you read so you can take your Reading Counts quizzes in September!

It’s perfectly safe, because I made it a private listserv  (only SMS kids can join), and I moderate it, which means if an inappropriate message comes through, I’ll remove that person from the listserv—permanently.
